Pescia, Tuscany: A medieval town
“Half-encircled by hills of olive groves, rises Pescia, in a peaceful cot…” A poet remembers Pescia like this, situated exactly to the south of an open valley, with a river running through the length of it. Crossing through the beautiful Pescia River, the town offers a healthy route with walks along the river.
Information on the town
The historical centre is divided into four quarters, Ferraia, San Michele, San Francesco and Santa Maria, who compete each year in the Palio dei Rioni, which takes place on the first Sunday of September. Heated challenges of archery recalling the history, a characteristic historic parade of about 600 people wearing clothing based on the style and fashion of the 14th and 15th Centuries. Visiting Pescia, you will notice the history that characterises the town. To the left bank you will find
Piazza Mazzini, formerly know as Piazza Grande and before that “mercato longo,” a square shaped in a long irregular form, following the trend of the nobility squares that surround it, which on the east side points to the stream and follows the course. At the top of the Square is the
Palazzo del Vicario with the Campanaria Tower (13th/14th Century). The south border is defined by the 1400s Madonna di Piè di Piazza church with works by Cavalcanti, where in 1600 an image of the Madonna was inserted together and a wooden polychrome roof. Again on the left side of the river is the Palazzo del Podestà (or Palagio), originated in the 1300s, today the head office of Gipsoteca entitled Libero Andreotti, a Pesciatine sculptor and an authorised spokesman of Italian Culture which started in 1900. Worth a visit is the Hesperidarium (Giardino degli Agrumi), that cultivates over 200 varieties of citrus fruits from all around the world, with an articulate route between fountains, vegetable tunnels and large figurines inspired by Pinocchio, plus the Bonsai Museum which has over 550m2 exposition space, showing olive trees, hundred year old cypress groves, rubber plants and other rare species that exist in the world.
